About Our
Fire Department
The Andersonville Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) serves 68 square miles of Anderson County, TN, including Andersonville, Belmont, Bethel, Fairview, Gooseneck, Heiskell, and Mountain View. Our team of firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and rescue technicians respond to fires, medical calls, vehicle accidents, and water rescues. We protect a year-round population of 10,000, which grows to nearly 15,000 in the summer. AVFD is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization funded by community donations.
The Andersonville Volunteer Fire Department has served the community since 1977, covering 69 square miles that include three cities, 8 miles of Interstate 75, 20 miles of shoreline on Norris Lake, and 15 miles along the Clinch River. Their jurisdiction also includes the busy I-75/441 corridor, a major travel route that significantly influences the volume and complexity of their emergency calls.
The department responds to approximately 1,100 calls each year, ranging from fires and medical emergencies to motor vehicle accidents. More than 90 wrecks occur annually on Interstate 75 and over 30 on State Route 441, highlighting the department’s vital role in managing high-risk, high-traffic incidents. Their responsibilities span residential areas, waterways, and major transportation routes, all of which demand consistent readiness.
As a volunteer agency, Andersonville VFD operates on limited funding supported by community contributions and an annual county allocation. Despite these constraints, they continue to provide essential emergency services and assist neighboring departments through mutual aid, helping maintain strong regional response capabilities and ensuring community safety.
